Our Story

Founded this year, 2024, CAO is an organization designed to serve as a collective voice for African organizations within West Michigan. Our coalition consists of 11 member organizations and counting, each bringing unique strengths and perspectives to our shared mission. The member organizations come from a diverse coalition, including nonprofits, country organizations, religious organizations and businesses, all with the aim of forging a more unified collective and voice.

Empowering Communities

Mission Statement:

The Coalition of African Organizations, West Michigan, is committed to uniting African organizations and allies, to foster community engagement and development, advocate for equitable policies, and contribute to the social and economic well-being of African immigrants and refugees in West Michigan.

Vision Statement:

To bring African immigrant leaders, influencers and allies together to organize for the collective good, and  representation within our communities.

Areas of Focus:

To together in different sectors of our needs as new generation immigrants including but not limited to:

  •  Education— Youth, Mentorship/ University Partnerships/Leadership Development

  • Health

  • Community building—Networking and Partnerships/Emergency-Crisis Response Cultural celebration.

  • Government– Constructive non-political Advocacy/Liaison

  • Economic Development— Small businesses
